Tonnellerie Baron

THE BARON COOPERAGE

The Baron Cooperage, one of the oldest cooperages from Charente, was established in 1875 by Henry Baron. Located in the heart of the Cognac region, its workshop has a long history of supplying the famous Cognac Houses and the Grands Châteaux of the Bordeaux vineyards. Today it is headed by Xavier Baron, 5th generation master cooper. Tonnellerie Baron focuses on quality and attention to detail throughout the wood selection and barrel fabrication process.

Traditionally, the barrels of Tonnellerie Baron are associated with Bordeaux, but have been used with Grand Crus in every significant wine region in France. Their barrels allow excellent expression of fruit and terroir, and fine integration of oak tannins, which makes them well suited to any wine where finesse and elegance is desirable.

EXPERTISE
Using several generations of experienced coopers and all of them, graduates of the cooperage school of Cognac, Tonnellerie Baron chooses the finest oaks from French forests in order to offer customers a large range of products exclusively in slotted oak. They use a unique technique for barrel toasting, to achieve consistency from barrel to barrel and year to year and in addition, they track each lot of wood from start to finish.

QUALITY CONTROL
The entire barrel fabrication process is done on premises, from receiving the oak tree to final barrel assembly. This level of control (not often seen) allows consistent quality. The wood is 100% air dried in a marine climate, ensuring enough moisture to properly season and eliminate harsh, green tannins. This seasoning occurs over a minimum of 24 months in the Baron stave yard. Tonnellerie Baron does not practice kiln drying to artificially accelerate the seasoning process.

Tonnellerie Baron's individuality stems from small production numbers, modern technology, and an on site timber mill process. Altogether these produce a wine barrel that adds an individual nuance for the winemaker who is looking to produce a unique wine.

Used by the vineyards of Bordeaux and beyond:
France (Bordeaux): Chateau La Ponte, Clos l'Eglise, Labegorce
United States (Napa Valley & Oregon): Opus One, Solena Winery
New Zealand (Marlborough): Mills Reef
Australia (Clare Valley): Robertson of Clare Wines
